The Most Beautiful Building in St. Louis

Recently Best Friend and I made a “chick trip” up to MO for some sight-seeing and shopping.  Since this is my “stomping grounds” I made the plans, and one of those was to see what I consider the most beautiful building there is

The Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis.

This magnificent cathedral was started in 1907.  It’s almost 400 feet long and the highest dome is 9 stories.  (http://cathedralstl.com/intro/ )

For me, it is nearly impossible to take it all in at once so I photograph as I look at it… bit by bit the small details.

The balance is incredible.

And those details are amazing.

It’s hard to believe that is carved in stone.

The main door has the Papal crest over it.

And once you walk thru that door and thru the vestibule, you enter then main sanctuary.  And your jaw will drop…
What is special about the cathedral are the mosaics.  It is the largest mosaic work in the world.  Every design is composed of mosaic works.  And yes, the gold is real.

I love the angels.  No wussy angels in here.  This look like warriors for the Lord.

The stained glass is of fairly simple design, and works well with the intricate mosaics.

The fantastic Rose Window.

It is lovely no matter where you look.

Beautiful.

In the garden courtyard there is a statue called “Angel of Harmony” and is dedicated to racial harmony and peace.

The angel wings are wind chimes.

It is one of the places I highly recommend be visited in St. Louis.  There are tours you can take or you are welcome to wander about on your own as long as there is nothing going on in it.

Expect to be awestruck.

  1. I've lived in the St. Louis area for 11 years and never knew we had such a treasure here. I will definitely be adding this as a place to visit VERY soon!

  3. Beautiful is right! Loved your pictures of the intricate designs, Teri. I'm sure it is even more breathtaking in person. The angel of harmony with the wind chime wings is very unique. Thanks for sharing this lovely building with us.
