Movie Date

Towns all over the US are revitalizing their vintage movie theaters and using them once again to show movies.

Some show vintage movies (like Casa Blanca or Gone With The Wind).  Some play foreign films (like The Music of Strangers or Our Little Sister).  Other have 'modern classics' (such as Close Encounters of the Third Kind or Saving Private Ryan).  And there are ones with family movies (such as National Velvet or Toy Story).

Many do a mix of genres.

The Roxy is doing a mix modern classics and family, alternating every other Sunday.

It's a great old theater and is also used for stage productions.

Team Red, White, & Blue took a block of tickets for one of the family showings.

Waiting for the show to start.  We were right at the end of our Whole30 program... so no refreshments for us.  Smelling that hot buttered popcorn was killer.  Box candy, popcorn, and sodas are all $1 each.

While I couldn't have any sweets... I had my Sweetie.  That was more than good enough!

Clan Hanna Photos at the Farmer's Market

I've mentioned my photography club a few times; one of our activities is having a booth at the Downtown Farmer's Market in Clarksville every Saturday May through mid October.  Members who wish to set up their photos for sell and chat to those passing by about the club.

Labor Day Saturday was my turn...

I had been back from Minnesota for only two day, so it was a scramble to get ready.  I did a lot of fast matting so I'd have a variety available.

And here we are all set up.  It was a perfect day to be there.

Since Himself was there to help, we could take turns looking around.  It was nice not to have to stay in one place all morning.

And being there early meant we definitely beat the crowds.

We didn't get any 'things' from the other vendors but we sure had fun with munchies!  LOL  Besides our lunch from a Mexican food truck we also had fresh baked tomato & basil scones, fruit hand pies, and Amish home-made ice cream.  

Plus I moved a few photos.

It was a fun morning.  I'm looking forward to next season when I'll be better prepared.

A Small City In The Civil War - Ft. Defiance, Clarksville, TN

Another one of our Civil War stops during Bro 1's visit was at Ft. Defiance.  Himself and I had not visited since it was fixed up and an interpretive center was built.  " The four-acre Fort Defiance park features earthen fort and walking trails. The city of Clarksville dedicated a new $2 million Fort Defiance Interpretive Center in 2011 in time for the 150th anniversary of the start of the American Civil War in 2011. The Fort has been owned by the City of Clarksville since the mid-1980s, when it was donated to the city by retired Judge Sam Boaz who had owned and preserved the site for some time."  

"In November 1861, Confederate troops began to build a defensive fort that would control the river approach to Clarksville, Tennessee. They mounted three guns in the fort. On February 19, 1862, Federal gunboats came up the river from Fort Donelson and reported the fort displayed a white flag and was deserted. The Federals took over the fort and enlarged it so that it would control traffic on the Hopkinsville (Kentucky) Pike. Clarksville was left with a small garrison of Union troops. In April 1862, this small garrison was made up of the 71st Ohio Volunteers commanded by Col. Rodney Mason.

During July and August 1862, there was an increase in guerrilla activity around Clarksville. On August 18, 1862, Clarksville was recaptured by Confederate Cavalry. Col. Mason was cashiered for surrendering Clarksville so easily. Union soldiers were sent from Fort Donelson to retake Clarksville in September 1862. Skirmishes were fought at New Providence on September 6, 1862 and at Riggins Hill on September 7, 1862. The town and fort were reoccupied by Federal troops who remained for the rest of the war. Col. Bruce was placed in command at Clarksville."   (Wiki)

Here's an interesting bit of information in the museum.

It was SO hot that day that we didn't walk on the trails.  

  

But our visit to the center was nice.

There was information on how the fort was made...

...and a diorama of how it looked.

The museum is nicely laid out.  Each of the figures along the wall tells a bit when you push a button.

This one has about four different speakers who read from diaries and letters.

The park is quite active with lecture series, special events, and reenactments.  We will definitely be back in cooler weather.

Downtown Clarksville

Crazy busy right now catching up on a dozen things.  I'll be back in a few days when I have time to catch my breath.  Been doing all sorts of things the last few weeks, so there's a lot to share!

Teri's Tours and B&B

Recently we had the pleasure of having Himself's oldest brother (Bro 1) come to The Sticks for a nice long visit.  It's been 11 years since they have seen each other and we wanted to show him a good time while he visited.  Like me, he loves seeing new things and learning.

Well alrighty then!

We did a 'hypertufa' plant pot class (more on that in another post).  Bro 1 made 2 nice pots that I will ship up to him once they have cured.

And Himself arranged a black smith lesson with one of his friends from the Possum Trot Forge.

He also enjoys history so we visited the Jefferson Davis (President of the Confederacy) Monument.

Plus we did another Confederate stop at Ft. Defiance in Clarksville.  The city has a very nice museum and grounds that are free to visit.

We all like genealogy so we visited Greenwood cemetery in Clarksville.

Bro 1 has a degree in horticulture, all things 'plant' interest him.  That was an easy to accommodate!

One of our excursions was out to the Amish produce auction and around to various farm stands.

My favorite farm stand was prepping onions for storage.

He also has a taste for good chocolate, so we did a factory tour at Olive & Sinclair artisan chocolate makers.

Enjoying an appetizer of tahdig (crispy rice) at our favorite Persian restaurant.  I also had a blast cooking favorite recipes... Beef Stroganoff, black beans & rice, Chicken Rolade, and Rosemary Thyme marinated steaks.

And of course there was a lot of just sitting on the couch visiting, looking at family photos, and sharing of our home.  It was a great visit and we're looking forward to him coming back.

But alas...there were two things that Northerner did not like about The South:

The insane humidity.

Good Eats: Fly Chicken Fly at Ft. Campbell, KY

Sometimes you find really great food at little "hole-in-the-wall" places.

On a recent trip to Ft. Campbell we discovered just such a place.  Directly across the street from Gate 4 is a restaurant with a fun name... "FlyChickenFly".  How can that not get your curiosity up?  Combine the curiosity with the view I'd read in the paper a few month back had us turning around to give it a try.

It is a TINY establishment.  But as the saying goes, "Great things come in small packages".  There's only 2 tables that seat four each.  Most of the orders are take-away.

We studied the menu for quite a while before ordering.

I got the Glabi (ribs) box.  It came with rice... topped with a fried egg, noodles, mild kimchi, some greens, and 3 little fried dumplings.  

Himself ordered the Chicken Teriyaki box.

The meal also came with miso soup and we ordered Korean egg rolls.

Next trip... the Korean spiced chicken!
