SPRING Garden Show Ideas

It’s that time of year again… time for the Nashville Lawn and Garden Show!  Every year it gets me primed for SPRING (for the purpose of this post… we will pretend to forget that after Spring comes Summer, when I will be wishing it were Winter again).

Now, where was I…?

Oh right… SPRING!!!

The time to get fancy with the flowers.

And this year Himself was home to go with me!

What is great about this particular lawn and garden show is how they have it arranged.  You enter into a huge room that is set up with many full size garden and patio displays.

Love this outdoor kitchen with the pizza oven.  I want one!  Not only can you bake a pizza in this, you can also bake incredible bread.

Some of the displays were more rustic.  This vendor always does something with the ‘funky junk’ idea.

I like the comfy little sitting areas.

They are so easy to recreate.

Even rust can look fantastic if arranged well.

How cool is this Italian patio?

Another regular vendor set up a really fun fountain.  The little ‘shed’ behind us is really a recirculating fountain.  Water flows down the tin roof, drips over the edge into a catch basin and goes around all over again.  And how fun was it that they set it up as a place to take photos?

Several of the vendors had dish gardens as part of their displays.  This one would be so quick and easy to do.  I can see a cute little ‘house’ style birdhouse in here.

And I love these broken pot fairy gardens.  Now if one of my old pots were just break in an ‘artful’ way…

Himself really liked this lighted fountain.

After the yard displays, there are the florals.

Orchids…

Bromeliads…

And the floral arrangements…

The next area where commercial vendors are set up.

Some are selling plants but it’s still too early to put them in the ground.

But they are beautiful to look at.

And some are there with fun and fabulous ‘garden’ décor.

Love this!

I could browse thru this area for half a day!

Himself… not so long…

He’s wanting to head over to the man toys.

Where all the other guys are happily browsing.

I guess we all dream of spring in different ways!

My Artful Friday - 8 March '13

I’m getting back into the swing of things… plus I’ve had more time to play!  (Keeping a housework schedule really frees up time in a huge way!)  I’ve had one really big creative project regarding my photography that I’ll tell you about soon, it’s been keeping me very busy.

But I’ve had time to do a few things other than photos…

“Take A Word” had a challenge to use ‘warm colors’ in a creative project.  I printed off 4 of my photos of fire for the reds and oranges in them… plus the visual ‘warm’ feeling of the fire itself. I took these photos as my BIL Big J was preparing a “Low Country Boil” for Himself’s birthday.  I used heavy copy paper as I wanted a soft matt look to the print. I cut them into a 2”X6” size. From there I played around with 3 that are a series of shots of the fire as it burned. I mounted them as a triptych on a single piece of heavy card stock.

I used the 4th photo to make a book mark using the ‘warm colors’.

I played around with my watercolor pencils for another challenge.  It’s the first time I’ve tried to do a human figure, so while it definitely needs work… I’m fairly pleased with it.  (The beach sand is actually more tan than yellow.  I don’t know why the scan picked it up so yellow!)

Six Candles for Gone Walkabout

Wow… I posted my first blog 6 years ago; and did only 17 posts in that first year.  At that time I really didn’t understand much about blogs or blogging.  I wanted a way to share photos and stories with my family and friends.
Gradually I started reading other people’s blogs, learning about blogging as time passed.  I have to admit, I was surprised when I started getting comments and shocked when followers started happening!
A while back I gave some thought as to just why I like to blog.  I came up with several reasons.  I blog because I enjoy sharing my world and I enjoy the processing of writing.  I write when I want and about things that interest me.  I don’t want the pressure of blogging for income and you’ll never see an ad on my blog if there is anything I can do about it!  Occasionally I will write an unsolicited review of something/somewhere that I either loved or hated.
I enjoy being part of the blogging world, both as participant and recipient!
Here’s to another year of going walkabout!

Volunteering for a Cause and for Fun

Since Himself and I took the volunteer orientation at Whole Foods last month, we have worked at two events.  It’s so different working a class rather than taking it!  We get there about an hour before the program starts (either a class or a special catered event) and help with set-up.

This means we get the trays set up that hold the components of each recipe, including pre-measured ingredients.  The student tables need to be set and the paperwork put in place.  Each setting must also have an apron (if a class) draped over the chair.

We stepped in last week when there weren’t enough volunteers and worked a class called “Desserts for Two”.  It ended up being us and one other volunteer!  Thankfully Drew was an old hand at this and could make up for having to greenhorns in the kitchen with him!  LOL  It was a wee bit crazy since we were still short volunteers but we made it happen.

The cool part about working classes is that we are observing the lesson, helping the students as they work (therefore getting a bit of experience ourselves), and we get to eat the meal too!  Also we can have a set of the recipes being taught that night.  It’s not hard at all to munch away on ‘vanilla chiffon genoise’, peaches flambé, chocolate mousse, or little fruit tarts.  Mmmmmm…

The special event we worked was a whole different ball game.  We showed up and our job was to plate the food, while students affiliated with the event served.  Then we cleaned up when it was over.  Pretty easy, even tho a bit tiring (standing so long on those concrete floors wears me out!).

One reason we wanted to do this particular special event was that it was a fund raiser.  It was to benefit the Visitation Hospital in Haiti.  http://www.visitationhospital.org/   Here’s a little bit about their work:

“VHF was founded in 1999 with a mission to provide competent and compassionate healthcare to the people of southwest Haiti and to empower them with resources to pursue their basic right to health and health education.  Our initial project was to create the site, infrastructure and buildings for a rural hospital and clinic in one of the most widely underserved Nippes Department of Haiti. In January 2008, the first part of this goal was realized with the completion and opening of Visitation Clinic. Visitation Clinic has become a model for creating transformative healthcare in rural Haiti.”

Besides the dinner fund raiser, there was also a silent auction of donated items…many from Haiti.  We wanted to donate to the cause so I bid on a bead set that had gotten no bids.  After all, it is for a great cause.

"Sweetheart" Fun - Guest Post by Himself

Hey…

One of the things I like to do is ‘compare cultures’ concerning things here in the U.S. verses pick-a-country.  Mostly I ask about normal things like home scenarios and local customs.  Other times I ask about give/take situations concerning senior/junior members of a family, or perhaps about bosses/subordinates.   And sometimes I just ask about fun issues.   Or things we could consider entertainment.   But in a good way.

Take a look at the below picture I got from somewhere.   It is college kids in some sort of ‘mud football game’.    Well, I sent this picture to one of my Chinese friends I had met on the ship who used to write to me.    Below are our words about it…

Himself:  “This was probably a ‘mud bath’ that the kids played in for some silly event—perhaps at a football game.”

My Chinese friend:   “Mud bath?  I never heard about it.  We are not allowed to do this at school and we wont do that too.”

I must admit – I’m not sure if I would want to do the above either, but who knows – at their ages perhaps it would have been fun…(as long as a shower was close by – what parent will let you into their car looking like this!)  But such are the silly items that I occasionally bring up just from a curiosity point of view – ‘what people will do’…

As one gets older, I suspect ‘what one will do’ becomes more…tame.   I know that it is that way for me.  One, things requiring speed just aren’t gonna happen anymore.  You lose control of a speed event (even trying to dodge a tackle for touch football) and you can slip and ‘pert-near kill yourself’ as they say in the South.   Who wants to be limping around for a week for something you used to be able to shrug off in a day?!

‘Shrug off’…

Some things are easier to shrug off than others.  In a way, it depends on ‘how cool you go about it’.   You could trip and almost fall…but if you ‘do it looking cool’ you can at least save SOME face!   And the few that still snicker, you can look at them, shrug, and say, “Hey…it happens to everyone.”   Cool.

But what happens when you deliberately try to look UN-cool?   To the point of looking ridicules?   That is remembered.   And sometimes that is the point -- remembering.   Such was what recently happened in our church with the senior Sunday school class of which Teri and I are a part.   What they did was throw a ‘Sweetheart Banquet’ for the young couples in our church.  Our class would provide the meal, the babysitting for their kids, and the entertainment.   The young couples?   Enjoy.   And laugh.

I originally didn’t know about the ‘laugh’ part.   I was volunteered to provide the evening dinner music via keyboard.   Not something I normally do, I was kinda nervous.  That is, until I heard what the other entertainment was to be.  Mine was nothing compared to that!

What some of the senior class did was dress in period-costumes and, well…act silly.  In front of everyone!  With 60’s and 70’s music playing some sang like the ones who originally sang it.   For instance, our very formal Sunday School teacher and his wife dressed as Sonny & Cher and sang the 1965 classic, ‘I got you, Babe!’ – complete with the body language they used on that show.  (Teri, who had worked with community theater years before, helped with the animated movements they were supposed to do.)  Other bouncy songs with bouncy seniors were sung and danced to also – in ways that made their kids/grandkids wonder what got into them!   And in CHURCH!

(What was sad is that many of the young people didn’t even recognize the songs.  I suddenly felt old…)

The tops to this was the ‘Ugly Woman’ skit – by two of the older guys in our class who, well…did quite well in that part.  Dressed in drag, they pulled a trick on the pastor of the church who, uh…said something he should have perhaps kept quiet about.   In a sermon, he mentioned ‘being kissed by a young lady’…who eventually became Miss Tennessee (they were in elementary school when this happened.)   Realizing he said something that was raising people’s eyebrows, he went on to say that when someone asked him, “Do you ever think about the fact that you could have been married to Miss Tennessee?” he answered (as people’s eyebrows were going higher and higher listening to this), “Now WHY would I want to be married to Miss Tennessee when I can be married to Miss Heavenly?!     His own wife blushed at that statement while shaking her head…

Playing off of that statement (which had happened weeks ago), the two older men in drag called themselves ‘The Mann Sisters’ – with the first names of ‘Iwanta’ Mann and ‘Ineeda’ Mann.  And across their chests were sashes that said, “Miss Tennessee…and Miss Heavenly.

Pictures tell the rest…

Part of the banquet on the gym floor.  I’m in the background playing keyboard.

The ladies preparing food – at this point, desserts…

The men, serving -- carrying food, seating, helping out.   And looking quite dapper in the process!

I just looked on when not playing keyboard.

Others took pictures.   Recall, the people doing this were their parents, and in some cases, their grandparents.   But so far, they weren’t too embarrassed seeing them up there on stage…

…until…..

(Here are 60+ Ronnie & Russell – both retired and dressed up as the Mann Sisters.  They were ‘dressed to kill’ from their tiaras and a lovely smile…)

…down to their polished toenails, ‘tats’.…and ‘cute shoes’.

Strutting their stuff in the crowd.   But as they ‘worked the crowd’, they slowly made their way over to a certain man who, upon seeing Miss Tennessee and Miss Heavenly sashes across their chest, knew he was in trouble…

Here is Pastor Mike watching…getting more red faced by the moment.  His wife Pam is seeing what is about to happen…

…and slid her chair out away from him.   She soon reached over and grabbed her own cell phone to take pictures of the spectacle as ‘Miss Tennessee’ approached.   And in addition to saying things like, “My dear Mikey, do you remember the time…we got together… just the two of us…?” (and this and that)  Ronnie went on about ‘all the wonderful nostalgia’ they had ‘way back then’.

And then Miss Tennessee paused…

…and 60-something Miss Tennessee Ronnie planted a lip-stick kiss ‘right on the top of his bald head’ as he stated he would when we were practicing this event.   Pastor Mike is taking it in stride, but look at his body-language.   I would say that he rued the day he made such a statement in front of the congregation!

Others joined in too with other skits, songs, and whatever.  Here Sunday School leader Mike and his wife Judy dressed like their interpretation of Sonny & Cher singing ‘I got you Babe’.

And so it went, with people laughing, singing along, dancing (sorta), and I don’t know what all.

The point of all this?   To get together, be served, enjoy a meal, and to just…have…fun.   And to show some of the younger crowd that ‘life – even at church, doesn’t ever have to get boring or stuffy’.    That you can be real.   That God Himself has a sense of humor and that it is OK to laugh.   At ourselves.   At each other.  At…Life.   And along with the above mentioned scenarios was food, the gift of serving, the gift of prayer, a devotion, and people reaching out to others saying, “You are important.   You count.

And we care…”

Himself

(PS:  But I would probably have to agree with my Chinese friend – I won’t do that…   Or would I?)

My Artful Friday - 1 March '13

Wow… I haven’t had an “Artful Friday” post in almost 2 months!  But don’t think I’ve not been being creative!  My focus has been on remodeling my studio, doing photo shoots, taking classes, and having company in our home.
My artistic endeavors are picking back up.  Besides my “Artful Reader Club” projects like you saw yesterday, I’ve joined another art based book club.  All the members are reading the same book and creating art based on prompts given by the group’s leader.  The book we’re all reading is “Fabulous Friendship Festival” by SARK.  It’s a journal style book about the different types of friendship.  I’m enjoying it so far.
Each week we do an art journal entry based on what we’ve read and/or prompts by the group leader.

My cover.
My album is an 8x8 scrapbook album (easier for me to work with).  I have based my album on the Chinese quote "An invisible red thread connects those who are destined to meet, regardless of time, place, or circumstance. The thread may stretch or tangle, but will never break."
If there was ever a ‘red thread’, it was my meeting Himself.  Me… a small town Missouri girl just graduated from high school.  Himself… a North Dakota farm boy now a Special Forces sergeant stationed in North Carolina.
Yet God brought us together.

Title page.
Simple, breezy...fun. The writing looks 'white' but is actually done with a silver pen. I used that color because of the old Girl Scout song "Make new friends but keep the old; one is SILVER and the other is gold."

Prompt 2 – Self Friendship
Our second prompt was to read the section in Chapter 1 on “self friendship” and journal it.
I cruised thru this chapter pretty fast because so much of it was about learning to like yourself and making time for yourself.  That’s never been an issue for me.  Guess you could say I have a very healthy self esteem!
As I thought about it, I realized there has never been a time that I wasn’t ‘friends with myself’.
As a child, even tho our homes were in nice neighborhoods…we lived around some strange neighbors.  At one home, my friend’s mother would not let him leave the yard… period.  Not to come into our yard to play (yard…not house), not to ride his bike, not to play in the field behind our houses.  (We lived in a very small town with no real crime in the mid 60s – almost ‘Norman Rockwell’).  Anyway, I would get tired of only playing in his yard and would head out into the fields and woods to play and explore.  We moved from there when I was about nine into a nice neighborhood with worse neighbor kids.  To our north was a family of nut cases (the kid my age ended up going to prison for grand theft auto where he was killed) and to our south, that kid ended up being an arsonist who went to prison also.
Needless to say… I played alone a lot.
Now that I’m ‘all grown up’, I still find myself enjoying solitary pursuits.  When I married Himself, he was a Special Forces soldier and was deployed a lot.  When he retired… he went to work seasonally on a ship in the Bering Sea.
So I am still playing alone a lot.

Prompt 3 – Creating New Friendships

Prompt 4 – Friendship Nourishment

Early in February a challenge at Artist’s Play Room was to create a piece of mail art.  Since I try to send something thru the mail to the babies at least twice a month, I thought I would be fun to start sending their wee gifts in a fancy envelope.  So my very first one was a present that would come in around Valentine’s Day.

Artful Reader's Club Review: Wisdom's Daughters

"Wisdom's Daughters: Conversations with Women Elders of Native America" by Steve Wall, Harvey Arden.

I had high hopes for this book but was sadly disappointed.  I had hoped to find wisdom from the elders as they lead their people in the 21st century… how to integrate into a world growing in technological leaps and bounds while keeping their heritage alive.

Instead almost all the women interviewed lamented for “the good old days”, told stories of the old legends, and proclaimed their spiritual superiority.  There were no ideas for advancement or ways to improve the lives they themselves admitted were depressing and toxic to the young people.

Perhaps Mr. Wall and I have a different definition of “wisdom”.  Personally I don’t see doing the same thing over and over expecting different results as being very wise…

My collage represents what I see as being caught between the dreams of an idealized past and the possibilities of the future.
