Last month our Sunday School class put on the 2nd
annual Valentine’s dinner and show for our church. Last year was 50s/60s music skits. This year, we did ‘Hee Haw’.
For those of you who don’t know what Hee Haw is, it was a TV
comedy show based out of Nashville, TN.
The skits and music were all country-western and bluegrass, with the
comedy being pulled from ‘country bumpkin’ type jokes. Was it corny?
Yes, absolutely. Was it
funny? Yes, absolutely! (You can look it up on You Tube).
(The skit photos were taken during the semi-dress
rehearsal. Some were in costume and some
weren’t. From here on, I’m going to describe
the evening as if you know the TV show).
Our guests came in and were seated for dinner. The costumed cast members were the servers,
with another group the cooks.
To get things going, one of the servers called out “Hey
Grandpa, what’s for supper?”
To which ‘Grandpa’ replied with the night’s menu (ham, baked
potato, green beans, salad, and dessert).
And the serving began!
It was a hearty meal with food leftover.
‘Stringbean’ serving seconds of green beans.
The kitchen crew also baked the desserts. Lots of them.
They were soooooo good!
My job for the evening?
Photographer! I set up a ‘photo
booth’ and took photos of the guests that wanted them, plus took some shots
during the meal.
After the meal the Hee Haw skits began.
We had ‘Buck and Roy’.
(“…I thought I found true love, then you met another and
Phffft! you was gone”.)
We had ‘Minnie Pearl’.
(HOW-DEE!!)
We had the “Gossip Girls”.
(“We’re not ones to go around spreading rumors… so you’d
better be sure and listen close the first time!”)
‘The Naggers’ were there too.
We had ‘corn field pop-ups in quantity.
‘Stringbean’ and his crow were in the corn field too.
(I couldn’t believe someone actually had a crow puppet! LOL)
There was a lot of ‘gloom, despair, and agony’ going around!
‘Junior Samples’ tried to sell a car to the crowd too. (If that sweet VW Bug really were for sale, I’d
jump on it!)
Finally, Himself was KORN radio announcer ‘Charlie Farkleson’.
(The real ‘Charlie Farkleson’).
The evening went great.
There was so much laughter and singing along from our guests. At the end, there was a standing ovation for
our efforts.
Church members are already asking about next year!!
