Pinterest Inspired: Moss Garden Terrariums

One of the many (many, many, many) things that has caught my eye on Pinterest are the moss garden terrariums.  As a kid I would make them but I haven’t done it in years.

If you’ve noticed on some of the posts I’ve done about our walks in the woods around our home, there are a lot of rock cuts along the old railroad bed that are covered – and I mean COVERED – with moss.

So with a little Pinterest inspiration - check out my pin board at: http://pinterest.com/mission_chick/project-moss-gardens/  -  I gathered up my pretty jars and planned a craft day with Best Friend.

And one of the crafts we did was the terrariums.

We took a quick hike to find moss and lichens to go in our jars.  One the way back to the house we stopped behind the shed to get some small stones for drainage and some potting soil.

And from there, we just had a good time!

This is a practice one I made before Best Friend came out.  The big stone is a fossilized coral that crystallized.  It’s beautiful.  Himself and I found it on one of our walks.

Here is the one I made with Best Friend.  The stone is from Alaska.

I don’t know what sort of moss or lichen the ‘fluffy’ one is.  It grows up in the trees and gets knocked down during storms.  We found just a few pieces of it.

Then later in the week, I made three more so I’d have a nice arrangement on my little desk.

The small one has some red moss.  I found this growing on a fallen tree and had to pull it off with the bark.

This middle size one I made to remind me of the standing stones all over Scotland.  I brought the two little stones back with me.  Next trip into town I’m going to stop at Hobby Lobby and see if there are any tiny sheep (from the model train area) that I could put in there.  Then it will REALLY remind me of my trip!  LOL

And the tall one has a lichen stick and well as some tiny plants that were growing in the moss.  It will be interesting to see how big they get.

Here are the two that Best Friend made while she was out here.  The one on the left is for her orchid.  The right one is her moss garden.  She found a loopy vine on our walk and worked it into the design.  She also has a little Indian Strawberry growing in her moss.  They are a pretty little plant.

  4. Oh, I like your moss gardens. I'm going to try some. I planted some in pots a couple of posts ago and they're doing pretty well, but rather plain. Nice woodsy project.
